Lockheed  F-104B  "Starfighter"

These photos were taken at the McClellan Air Museum. This is one of
26 F-104B's built by Lockheed in Burbank, California. It is serial no.
57-1303 and is a F-104B-10-LO. It was delivered to the USAF in 1958
and turned over to NASA in 1959 to become NASA 819. It was used to
train X-15 and Space Shuttle pilots. It's high landing speeds made it
ideal for this mission. Another mission was chase plane for the X-15
and others. It was originally built with downward firing ejection seats
and a different canopy. It was later converted to upward firing ejection
seats and the canopy was modified for this purpose. It arrived at the
McClellan Air Museum on July 13, 1983 in a C-130.
