Martin  RB-57A

I took these photographs at three different air museums.  The natural finish RB-57A,
number 52-1488, at the New England Air Museum, the black finish RB-57A, number
52-1459, at the National Warplane Museum, and the ejection seat at the Combat
Air Museum.

Ejection Seat Photos

The RB-57A ejection seat below is painted with the words " Nav  52-1451".   The J. Baugher
USAF Serial Numbers site shows a block of RB-57A's built with serial numbers 52-1426 to
52-1492, but 52-1451 is not listed.  I received an email that said the sender was an RB-57A
pilot and witnessed the crash of 52-1451.  I replied to the email asking if I could quote him on
this page.  I never received a reply.  I have lost the email through a hard drive crash and can-
not recall his name or the exact location of the crash.  I do recall that it was near the state of
Kansas.  He related that he heard a distress call from 52-1451 and was nearby.  He was able
to overtake 1451, but stayed to the right and to the rear because the pilot had stated that he
and the navigator were about to eject.  The sender saw the navigator eject and his chute de-
ployed.  The pilot stated that his seat had failed to fire.  He had removed his control column
to eject and could not get it back into it's normal position.  He was going to land using the
trim tabs, but 1451 stalled and spun into the ground killing the pilot.  The seat is at the
Combat Air Museum in Topeka, Kansas.  The staff I talked with did not know where the
seat came from and even stated that they did not think it was a B-57 seat.  Note: RB-57A
serial number 52-1452 is listed on the Baugher site as derelict at Forbes AFB in 1977.  Forbes
is just down the street from the CAM and there is a RB-57A on a pylon at the main gate.
RB-57A, serial number 52-1480 is also listed as at Forbes AFB, Topeka, Kansas.
