Allyn
Sales Co. built desk
display models for Douglas Aircraft and Boeing Aircraft. They also built
two Convair Aircraft models as far as I know. The scale of the kits
varied, but the single engine kits
were about 1/48 scale. The models were sold as kits to the general
public. They were very simple kits
and lacked a lot of detail even by 1950's standards. There were
no landing gear, cockpits, and the
control surfaces were not outlined. In the early 1950's I owned and
built (assembled) the SkyKnight,
Skyrocket, and Convair F-102 prototype. My friend has the Skyshark,
Skyraider, and C-124. The
Skyknight, Skyshark, and Skyraider were cast in dark blue plastic. The
Skyrocket and XF-92A in
white. The C-124 and F-102 in gray/silver, and the Skystreak in Red. I
still have my F-102 and Sky-
rocket models in less than perfect condition. I found an unbuilt
Skyknight at a kit collectors show.
Around 1950 I was in my local hobby shop and the owner was showing a
customer an Allyn kit.
I went over and saw the most beautiful 1/48 scale Allyn Douglas A3D
Skywarrior model I had ever
seen at that time. I have never seen another one since and no one I
ever talked to had even heard of
it. Well, it does exist and I am not crazy. I saw one for sale on
eBay. It was built, but was complete.
I bid $300 and lost. I hope it's not another 55 years before I
see another one. See the images below.
